On secondment

Tell us about your career so far with ECL

I joined ECL in September 2008 as a Technical Business Analyst, I really enjoy the freight and logistics sector and the opportunity to join ECL was a great way to get back into this industry. I started in the IT department delivering a number of customer facing web projects. I had the opportunity to learn about GIS (Geospatial Information Systems) through my manager, this led me to be seconded into a year long project looking at fleet optimisation with our Operations team.

Describe a typical day for you at work

Working in Operations is certainly different from a typical IT role; I am working with fleet teams around the country to better understand how our courier runs work. By applying our mapping technology and data we can optimise our courier’s runs to be more efficient. I have worked with our sales teams to draw maps to show potential customers of our reach and capability and how ECL can help their business.

Right now I am working on a project to reshape our courier runs in Christchurch following the earthquake.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

I definitely think it is the opportunity to work in different parts of the company and gaining a better understanding of the complexities of how our company works. I really enjoy people contact and find it rewarding to be able to translate a person’s requirements into a technical solution. I have been fortunate enough to be able to apply my business analyst skills into different projects from both a technical and non-technical perspective.

What do you most enjoy about working for our company?

I think working with different people not only within ECL but also our customers has been very rewarding. Working for a larger company has also given me the ability to work in different parts of the organisation and being exposed to technology that I otherwise wouldn’t have been. I really enjoying thinking on my feet and finding new ways of doing something and having the ability to try it out.

What opportunities do you see for yourself with ECL?

I believe that GIS and location data will become even more prevalent in the future, the data we collect today can be used to design better courier runs, increase our efficiency and make our customer experience world class. I hope I can continue to build on the skills I have already gained and apply them in the different ECL business units.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I do a lot of mountain biking and road cycling. I am also working with various funding agencies and the Auckland Council to build a bike park in West Auckland.

Describe your personality in a few words?

Outgoing and optimistic. I enjoy the challenge if something doesn’t work the first time to try and find another way to do it.
