ECL plays key part in NZ Post Group's win at the sustainable 60 awards

Packaging Council of NZ Award
CourierPost has won a ‘highly commended’ award for its sustainable product lifecycle initiatives at the recent 2009 Environmental Packaging Awards.
Held by the Packaging Council of New Zealand, CourierPost entered the Packaging Design Award category with a range of initiatives such as its eco-range, micron reduction (packaging thickness) and recycling service for used packaging.
“As a company we are very proud to be recognised with this award,” says Katharina Krieger, Products and Promotions Manager for CourierPost and Pace. “We’ve really focused on how we can reduce our impact on the environment so it is great those initiatives are being recognised”
She says the judges were particularly impressed with the Backtrack Your Trackpak service which makes it easy for customers to recycle used trackpaks by providing a large reusable drawstring bag in which they can store their used packaging. When the bag is full a courier will collects and delivers it to a recycling plant.

Express Couriers is a member of the Sustainable Business Network. We have undertaken the organisation’s ‘Get Sustainable Challenge’. This rigourous assessment looks at our approach to sustainability as a whole, from strategy and policies to operations and performance monitoring. The Challenge helped us to identify specific areas that we must address in order to improve our sustainability performance.
The Get Sustainable Challenge 2008 National Winner
Through our participation in the Get Sustainable Challenge, Express Couriers was recognised as having made substantial progress in year one of our Five Year Sustainability Plan. Express Couriers was named the National 2008 winner of the NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in the emerging large business category. We were heralded for our commitment to embracing sustainable practices within the organisation and launching industry firsts, such as environmental packaging and recycling programmes, in which proceeds from the sale of the returned and recycled materials are donated to charities.
New Zealand Post Group win Gov3 sustainability awards
March 23rd 2009. ECL’s parent company, the NZ Post Group was presented with two awards by the Ministry for the Environment - recognise best-practice sustainability performance by members of the Govt3 scheme.
New Zealand Post’s continuous focus on its corporate responsibility programmes was recognised when it was awarded “Best Overall Performance by a large organisation for the five-year period 2003-2009”. The Award recognises the Post Group’s voluntary involvement with Govt3 since its inception, our focus on sharing information and learnings, as well as advancing our corporate responsibility programmes year after year.
New Zealand Post Group win Deloitte/Management Top 200 Ethical Governance award
December 5th 2009. New Zealand Post Group was awarded the 2008 Deloitte/Management Top 200 Ethical Governance award in December 2008 for its leadership across sustainability and broader corporate responsibility practices. The business is working hard to enhance transparency and public engagement about the Group’s activities.

DHL leading on climate records
January 1st 2009. DHL Express is the highest scoring logistics company on the Climate Counts environmental scoreboard.
In collaboration with Clean Air - Cool Planet, Climate Counts evaluates businesses on their efforts to review, reduce and report. It scores organisations’ impacts on the climate against 22 criteria. DHL gained points for setting clear goals for CO2 emission reduction, investment in renewable energy and efficiency programmes, and the offer of carbon-neutral products.
Climate Counts recognised DHL’s climate specific employee awareness programmes
and its public information on its efforts to address global warming.
The company received 67 points out of 100 to achieve the highest score for a logistics
company. John Mullen, chief executive officer of DHL Express, said the company remained committed to reaching the targets set for 2009 and beyond for air and surface transport and real estate, despite current challenging business conditions.
Deutsche Post World Net joins World Business Council for Sustainable Development
January 29th 2009. A group of around 200 members from 37 countries and 22 sectors, the the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is dedicated to seeking practical ways to balance economic, environmental and social interests.
“It’s the ideal platform for us to share our experiences in setting up sustainable structures as a global logistics service provider with business in more than 220 countries,” said DPWN chief executive officer Frank Appel.
In addition to becoming a member of the WBCSD, DPWN has joined the UN initiative:
Caring for Climate, part of Global Compact which defines 10 principles of human rights, job protection, the fight against corruption and environmental protection.
