At Our Place
Making a Difference Site by Site People on our sites are engaged in targeted environmental management initiatives (across fuel, electricity, waste and paper) as well as many community initiatives. Plus, we are reducing the environmental impacts of our largest properties.
Reducing the amount of waste that CourierPost sends to landfill by 30% before July 2010, is one key objective that everyone is working hard to achieve. Site waste audits across the country were undertaken last year, identifying core recycling priorities. Many steps are being taken to boost recycling practices; have less waste skips on our sites that are picked up less often; and to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
CourierPost is dramatically lowering our use of paper. Over the past year we have reduced our use of copier paper by 27%. We practice double-sided printing, using sustainably milled and ethically produced paper stock, and generating electronic only versions of marketing collateral wherever viable. On an ongoing basis, CourierPost assesses new as well as existing marketing pieces and products against sustainability criteria, targeting, and then pursuing areas for improvement.
Our printers are being upgraded to consume less energy, contain recyclable parts and use environmentally friendly toner. New operating software will allow monitoring of all print activity and further reduction waste paper.
Smart Properties Green Star certification was awarded to our Auckland Operations Centre this year. This is the first industrial site in Australasia to achieve Green Star Certification for its environmentally sustainable design, receiving Five Stars for best practice. The building on this site is fitted with high performance glazing; it uses natural light and ventilation; uses the latest PVC minimisation principles including PVC free cable and conduit; and is heat-insulated. Additionally, energy saving technologies are in place including installation of light motion sensors. As well as collecting rain water, stored for irrigation and the toilets, the building is fitted with water efficient toilets and tap ware.
The refit of its main administration building, CourierPost House, incorporates smart environmental design across building material, fit-out and furniture. The business as a whole benefits from what CourierPost learnt during this office refit project in early 2008.
