Our WorldThe benefits we’ve been able to achieve when embarking on new environmental programs has been immense. We’ve formed some excellent relationships with our suppliers and with our customers, which has translated into joint learnings for all of us. Taking Care of our world forms a large part of our company culture and overall vision of being the leading express courier, distribution and logistics company in New Zealand.
Investing in Smarter Technology
We utilise tools to increase the efficiency of our transport fleet. Harnessing the capability of Navman GPS vehicle monitoring, transport owner-driver trucks are tracked as they travel throughout the country. The Navman system has identified areas of transport duplication and has given us a tool to assign the closest vehicle to customers for collections. The efficiency improvements are resulting in fuel savings, improved response times for customer requests, as well as reductions in speed and engine idling times.
While the exact cost savings in fuel has not yet been quantified, the Navman GPS solution is an excellent tool for running a more efficient transport fleet.
Our relationship with Volvo Trucks has grown since early in 2008 when began upgrading our trucking fleet with new Volvo Trucks tractor units. The Volvo trucks use SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) meeting the Euro 4 standards. Running this new SCR system enables significant increases in fuel efficiency, setting a new benchmark in environmentally friendly transport.
CourierPost Fleet
To help reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, CourierPost are investing in the purchase of tyre pressure gauges to be distributed to all CourierPost courier contractors.
Under-inflated tyres are one of the most commonly ignored causes of high fuel consumption. Tyres lose air due to time (about 1 psi per month) and temperature (1 psi for every 10 degree drop) and under-inflated tyres have more rolling resistance, meaning that more petrol is used to keep vehicles moving.
At Your Place
BackTrack your Trackpaks
CourierPost is offering an industry-first recycling initiative that encourages its customers and staff to recycle used Trackpaks (plastic courier packs) instead of throwing them away. The proceeds from the recycling drive will be donated to a CourierPost nominated charity. Backtrack your Trackpaks - read the full press release
At Our Place
Turning our buildings green
Express Couriers has been able to adopt some fantastic new environmental options during the construction of any new buildings and also when refitting any of our existing buildings. Some environmentally friendly features we’ve adopted in our business include:
- Introducing workstation tabletops made of MDF board (which have reduced formaldehyde content and are sourced from certified sustainable forests). Our chairs are covered in 95% biodegradable wool fabrics and any workstation panelling is made from recycled materials with MDF board partitions.
- Where possible, carpets chosen are 100% biodegradable and fully recyclable wool blend, which gets the all-important NZ Environmental Choice tick.
- The lighting has movement sensors in communal areas and has been engineered for enhanced lighting levels and efficiency.
- The cafeteria in our Head Office building has guest seating that uses plantation wooden chairs with a veneer finish.
- Paints, sealants and adhesives used utilise low organic compounds.
In addition, whenever we undertake any upgrading of our facilities, where possible we ensure all existing chairs, filing cabinets etc are recycled where possible. Our sites are currently reviewing their waste and recycling practices as we strive to reduce our overall waste to landfill. |
