Department Of Internal Affairs BackTrack their Trackpaks

The Identity Services Group of the Department of lnternal Affairs is the primary source of information on personal identity and key life events. It registers births, deaths, marriages and civil unions, issues passports and other travel documents and manages applications for New Zealand citizenship.

As a result, Identity Services handles hundreds of thousands applications dispatched by courier each year. In light of the Govt3 initiative, to ensure that Government Departments take measures to reduce their carbon footprint, we are pleased to have reached an agreement with Courier Post to recycle used plastic courier packs, thus reducing substantially the amount of waste which would otherwise go to the landfill.

On approaching Courier Post to see if they had recycling systems in place, we were pleased to find out it was a simple matter of placing used plastic courier packs into a specified bag, which would be collected weekly and transported to a plant in Auckland for recycling. The recycling is not limited to Courier Post packs. It includes plastic packs from any courier service. Presently Identity Services is recycling up to 2,000 plastic packs every week.

This recycling initiative is one of several we've introduced, enabling us to reduce the amount of waste leaving our buildings by half over the last few months. We are constantly looking for more eco-friendly initiatives and are pleased to cooperate with Courier Post. They have provided a simple and cost effective solution on the path towards sustainability.
